Model configuration for fracture characterization

Model configuration for fracture characterization

Postby eaudegbe » Fri Sep 02, 2016 3:27 pm

As a subsequent step to my successful simulation of the CAN4 model, I am looking into the best way to configure the input model for characterizing seismic response to subsurface macro-fractures such as faults. I would greatly appreciate feedback regarding the following options I am considering:

1. Modeling discrete fractures using a very thin (ideally sub-centimeter) layer in the model and then refining the mesh around this very thin layer, which seems feasible with FDSim3D but may potentially result in impractical run times. Do you recommend this approach?

2. Another approach in literature is to specify a no-slip boundary condition at the location of the fracture. Would this second approach be possible with FDSim3D?

Thank you, and I look forward to your response.

I have doubts that your approach No. 1 would be very impractical and it will require to much computer resources.

We have no experience with a no-slip boundary condition at the location of the fracture, therefore we can help in this topic.
