September 2 - 6, 2007
Smolenice Castle (near Bratislava), Slovak Republic

General Information

Purpose

The purpose of the workshop is
   •

to bring together the various researchers who use numerical simulations to investigate dynamics of the earthquake source
   • to communicate the state-of-the-art of the earthquake dynamics research
   • to provide a unique opportunity for in-depth discussions

Topics

The sessions of the workshop will cover the following topics:
   • friction law
   • rupture history
   • stress distribution on the fault
   • role of heterogeneities
   • energy budget and seismic radiation
   • earthquake interaction
   • numerical techniques
   • modeling real earthquakes
   • slow earthquakes

Scientific Program

Approximately 30 talks are assumed. A talk and the corresponding discussion will last about 30 minutes. A poster session will also be organized. Of course there will be ample opportunity for informal discussions as well.

Workshop Venue

The venue is the Smolenice Castle near Bratislava, Slovakia (50 km from downtown Bratislava, i.e., approximately 1 hour drive). The Castle, owned by the Slovak Academy of Sciences, was converted into a unique conference center. Because of its very nice setting, picturesque architecture, history-evoking interior and pleasant atmosphere, the Castle is a very popular conference venue.
The full capacity of the Castle is 80 participants.

Maps showing location of the Smolenice Castle and color photos of the Castle are available.

September 2007

(Sunday)
Workshop Sessions: 3 – 5 September 2007 (Monday - Wednesday)
Departure from the Castle: 6 September 2007 (Thursday)

Transportation

Transportation from Bratislava to the Smolenice Castle will be organized.

The bus pick-up places in Bratislava:
   •    Autobusova stanica Mlynske Nivy (central bus station Mlynske Nivy)
   •    Bratislava hlavna stanica (central railway station)
   •    Bratislava Petrzalka (Petrzalka railway station)
   •    Letisko Bratislava (the M. R. Stefanik Airport Bratislava, BTS)

Participants may conveniently fly directly to Bratislava (main connecting airports are Munich and Prague). Several low-cost airline companies fly to Bratislava (e.g., SkyEurope, RyanAir).

Participants may also fly to Vienna, Austria. The Vienna International Airport (VIE) is located only 46 km from Bratislava.
There is at least one bus connection each hour from the Vienna airport to the Bratislava central bus station Mlynske Nivy (Autobusova stanica Mlynske Nivy). The bus stop at the airport is located directly in front of the arrival hall (less than 50 m from the arrival gate). For more details see:

   •    Eurolines - timetable
   •    Blaguss - timetable
   •    Blaguss - online booking
   •    SkyEurope - info on the bus/train connections

Alternatively participants may arrive in Vienna Railway Station (Südbahnhof or Westbahnhof). The participants may use one of many train connections from Vienna to Bratislava (Bratislava hlavna stanica or Bratislava Petrzalka).

Participants preferring individual transportation to the Smolenice Castle will be provided with detailed information on how to reach the Castle.
